Character History:
One of the basic concepts explored in the Dangan Ronpa series involved the idea of talent in young people and a society that seems to revolve around it. And they don't mean talent as in just being skilled at something; in this world, having a talent means being the very best at it, usually to a hyperbolic and ridiculous extent. This varies from practical talents such as being talented as a detective or a programmer, to the much more unexpected talents such as the talent of being a yakuza or a gambler. This is where Hope's Peak Academy comes into play; originally founded by a man named Izuru Kamukura, Hope's Peak is a special school which takes in talented high school students, gives them Super High School Level titles and shapes them into acting as hope for the world. Those who attend Hope's Peak end up living prosperous lives afterwards.
However, things don't always go so smoothly, especially as the Hope's Peak system can cause people to become too reliant on natural talents. This leads to the roots of Kiyotaka's story, through that of his grandfather, Toranosuke Ishimaru. Toranosuke was known for being a genius and attended Hope's Peak as the Super High School Level Manager. He went on to enter politics and moved through several public offices until he became the prime minister of Japan. However, everything crumbled apart after Toranosuke was implicated in a political scandal. Having coasted by through relying on his own genius and knowing nothing of effort, Toranosuke was unable to properly handle all of the public backlash, and he ended up resigning. His own business collapsed, and his family was saddled with many debts.
This brings us to Kiyotaka Ishimaru, who was born to the family and saw the after-effects of his grandfather's hubris. He grew up both admiring and hating his grandfather. Ultimately, he sought to become someone who would persevere through pure hard work, in order to avoid the trap of falling into being reliant on one's natural talents. He came to see the geniuses of the world as enemies to be overcome through hard work. Kiyotaka constantly studied and apparently worked out a lot as well, while making no time for activities that did not have an obvious educational value. He became a perfect model student in middle school and also served on his school's public morals committee. He was eventually scouted by Hope's Peak and was chosen to attend the school's 78th Class, with the title of Super High School Level Public Morals Committee Member. The details of the class's original stay at Hope's Peak are murky, but it seems that the class was able to forge a number of heartfelt memories before things started taking a turn for the worse.
Part of this oncoming darkness was rooted in the dark secrets of Hope's Peak itself, as it was under the control of a particularly shady steering committee. Hope's Peak had opened a Reserve Course for 'ordinary' students to attend with the promise that one day they might be able to transfer to the Main Course of Hope's Peak, but it was really just a front to rake in many people's money for the secret experiments spearheaded by the steering committee. The primary experiment that they worked on was known as the Izuru Kamukura Project, which involved the idea of infusing one person with every known talent so that they could become an artificial Super High School Level Hope for the world to rally behind. One Reserve Course student, Hajime Hinata, was eventually convinced to volunteer, and the process successfully turned him into a being possessing every talent, who was dubbed Izuru Kamukura after the school's founder. However, all of his power made him easily bored by everything around him.
At the same time, the Super High School Level Despair was preparing their own plans. What is the Super High School Level Despair? Well, that's the secret title that Junko Enoshima has for herself and her sister, Mukuro Ikusaba. Junko was bored with the world as it was and was also obsessed with despair, so she plotted with her sister to set a plan into motion to disrupt the harmony of the world and plunge it into despair. and Izuru Kamukura was one of the first pieces of the Despair's puzzle. Junko convinced him to run away from Hope's Peak and hang out with them, as Izuru was intrigued by the idea of something as apparently unpredictable as despair. Junko and Mukuro then trapped the members of the Hope's Peak student council and manipulated them into killing each other in the very first killing game, with Izuru as a spectator.
Hope's Peak attempted to cover up the incident afterwards, but Junko proceeded to leak information about the killing game along with information about the Kamukura Project and false information implicating Izuru as the mastermind behind the killing game. This incident became known as The Biggest, Most Awful Event in the History of Hope's Peak Academy. It caused an outrage against Hope's Peak to begin to stir among the public, and the entirety of the Hope's Peak Reserve Course, whom had been brainwashed by Junko, began to protest against the school. Junko later had the protest escalate into the Reserve Course students razing the new Hope's Peak building and then committing mass suicide. Despair spread throughout the world like a virus, which caused warfare to break out, and civilization in general began to collapse in the wake of despair. With the combination of all of these tragic events, Hope's Peak Academy had no choice but to close its doors.
However, the last headmaster of the school, Jin Kirigiri, spearheaded a plan to protect the remaining students. The original Hope's Peak building was to be converted to a shelter, and students who volunteered would be able to live out their lives in the shelter safe from despair. Ishimaru and the rest of his class all gave their consent, and they helped to convert the school into a shelter. Eventually, they were successfully sealed within the school with Jin. None of them were aware that two of their classmates who were locked in with them were the SHSL Despair, and that this situation factored into the sisters' plan as well. Eventually, Junko and Mukuro executed Jin Kirigiri, captured their classmates and wiped the last two years of all of their memories, which included the entirety of their memories of their time in Hope's Peak. They would wake up thinking that they were trapped in the school on what was supposed to be their first day of classes. By making them forget the bonds that they built and that they were locked in the school willingly, Junko had set the stage for the school life of mutual killing. She also hacked the airwaves so that the school's security camera would broadcast the game worldwide. Everyone would see the world's last hopes fall to despair...
As the final bits of preparation, it was decided at the last minute that out of the SHSL Despair, only Mukuro would participate in the game disguised as Junko. The real Junko would act purely as a mastermind, remaining in hiding while operating the mechanical bear known as Monokuma who would act as the 'headmaster' and host of the killing game. With everything set up, the students all woke up and tried to make sense of their situation. They eventually gathered at the entrance, with the last student to arrive being Makoto Naegi, the SHSL Lucky Student. Kiyotaka reprimanded him for his lateness and then oversaw everyone's introductions, being sure to interject when he believed that an introduction was going on for too long. They were soon called to the gym, where Monokuma appeared before them for the first time to explain the rules of the killing game to them. Under the rules of the killing game, a student could only "graduate" and get to leave the school by murdering another classmate without being caught. And whenever a murder occurred, a class trial would be held to try to determine the killer. Choosing the correct murderer would cause that murderer to be executed, and the class would then be able to resume their lives in the school. On the other hand, making the wrong choice will cause the rest of the class to be executed instead, while the true murderer will get to graduate.
The class railed against this very idea, but it wasn't long before Monokuma presented them with their first motive. Each of them received a personalized DVD containing a sign that something horrible was or could be happening to their loved ones in the outside world. The details of Kiyotaka's DVD were never disclosed, but it is possible that it had to do with his father Takaaki, who was later shown to be among the hostages Junko's people had collected. Kiyotaka attempted to bring order and organization to the class, in hopes of finding a way out of the school. He managed to start a daily arrangement in which everyone met up each morning and discussed any findings about their situation over breakfast. But despite his attempts to inspire close-knit vigilance, Sayaka Maizono was found dead in Makoto's room, and the next day "Junko" (or rather Mukuro) was abruptly killed by Monokuma after an attempt to defy him. Kiyotaka was initially convinced of Makoto's guilt in the murder of Sayaka based on the initial evidence, but in the ensuing class trial, Makoto was able to convince the class that the real murderer was Leon Kuwata, the SHSL Baseball Player. All of them had to witness as Monokuma brutally executed Leon, and Kiyotaka was left unable to string together words at the sight. He was back to his normal self by the next day, however, when he made a grim joke about whether Makoto would have slept well if Sayaka's body had not been removed.
Tensions ran high after the first trial, especially between Kiyotaka and Mondo Owada, the SHSL Bike Gang Leader. They had an explosive argument in which they each thought the other was weak-willed, and this escalated into the two of them agreeing to see who could stay in the school's sauna longer as an endurance challenge. The two were fired up about the challenge, but the winner was unimportant, as during the challenge, the two of them ended up forging an unlikely bond and no longer cared about their feud. They became extraordinarily chummy and began referring to each other as brothers, baffling everyone when they met the next day. Sadly, this joy was not to last, as Monokuma soon announced the next motive: secrets. Monokuma had embarrassing secrets about all of them, and he would reveal them all in a day unless another murder was committed. As a counter to that, Kiyotaka came up with the idea in which all of them would simply confess their secrets aloud so that the motive would be invalidated, but some of the others vetoed the idea, as they were not ready to be open about their secrets. The next day, it was Chihiro Fujisaki, the SHSL Programmer, who was found dead.
The following trial did not have a clear culprit at first and came with a number of surprises, from Toko Fukawa's murderous split personality to the truth about Chihiro's gender. But then, Mondo made a slip-up which made everyone realize that he was the most likely suspect. ...Everyone except Kiyotaka, that is. Kiyotaka was fiercely loyal to his new brother and refused to accept the idea that Mondo could have killed anyone, let alone Chihiro. It took a lot of debate and concrete evidenceand beating a rhythm game to get Kiyotaka to back down from his relentless defense of Mondo. It was clear that Mondo was the culprit, and in the ensuing vote, Kiyotaka was the only participant who voted incorrectly, because he still could not acknowledge it. Mondo confessed to his crime, and Monokuma helped to explain his motive; Mondo had been responsible for the death of his own brother, which was how he gained control of his motorcycle gang, and that was the secret that he was desperate to protect. When Chihiro entrusted his own secret about his gender to Mondo so easily, the difference in their respective strengths overwhelmed Mondo and sent him into a rage wherein he killed Chihiro. Kiyotaka was stunned to learn this and still could not accept any part of this story. He attempted to protest the execution, but his protests fell upon deaf ears. Monokuma proceeded to execute Mondo, and Kiyotaka let out a howling scream in the aftermath.
Mondo's guilt and his subsequent death broke Kiyotaka. He stopped speaking in general, and soon he even stopped to attend the morning meetings that he himself had arranged. Monokuma even rubbed salt in the wound when the group was investigating a mysterious machine in a newly unlocked area of the school. Monokuma claimed that it was a time machine, and Kiyotaka started speaking again in order to express his desire to go back in time and stop Mondo from ever killing anyone. Monokuma proceeded to clarify that it could only go back in time by one minute before ultimately admitting that the machine was only an air purifier, and that time machines don't exist. This dashed Kiyotaka's spirits further, and he became more isolated in his grief. In the meantime, the rest of the class discovered a laptop that Chihiro had modified prior to his death. The laptop contained a helpful AI program that emulated Chihiro's personality, known as Alter Ego. With the laptop secured in a part of the school that was safe from the mastermind's surveillance, Alter Ego was set to work deciphering encrypted files that could help them find answers about their imprisonment, but they had to limit their visits to the room in order to keep the mastermind from getting suspicious.
But Kiyotaka soon caught wind about the program and refused to believe that it was not the real Chihiro. He came to Makoto and started speaking once again to plead with Makoto about seeing Alter Ego. Makoto reluctantly took him over to see the laptop, and Kiyotaka was quick to ask Alter Ego if he resented Mondo for killing Chihiro, or Kiyotaka for failing to stop Mondo. Alter Ego expressed that Chihiro would have forgiven them and also attempted to emulate a simulation of Mondo to raise Kiyotaka's spirits. This worked, but in a very different way then expected. At that moment, Kiyotaka believed that Mondo's soul entered his body and fused with his own soul. His hair turned gold, and he began to refer to himself as a new person, Kiyondo Ishida. As Kiyondo, he acted in an impersonation of Mondo's crude and reckless demeanor. He was also eager to spend more time with his "bro" Chihiro, but Kyouko Kirigiri had to put her foot down in order to keep interactions with the laptop limited. Hifumi Yamada was also desperate to spend extra time with Alter Ego for his own reasons, and this caused he and Kiyondo to butt heads. Soon afterwards, the laptop had went missing, and the two of them suspected each other, but Kirigiri knew that it was not either of them, because she had commanded Alter Ego to scream for her if any of them came near the laptop without the others.
This was all actually a part of SHSL Gambler Celestia Ludenberg's scheme to commit murder because of the third motive, which was a hefty cash reward. Celestia had stolen the laptop and manipulated Hifumi into thinking that Kiyotaka had abused her and gotten her to steal it for him. So, they set up an elaborate double murder scheme together. They sent Kiyondo an anonymous note offering to tell him about a secret passage that could lead out of the school. Despite the apparent changes in his personality, Kiyondo was still easily tricked and very punctual. He arrived in the room at the right time, and he was promptly killed when Hifumi bludgeoned him over the head with a hammer. Celestia would proceed to betray and murder Hifumi, and she was then executed for that murder in the following trial. And so, the lives and dreams of Kiyotaka and his murderers came to an end at that time.
Abilities/Special Powers: He is essentially an ordinary human being and his talent pretty much just related to being hard-working and very disciplined. He is also unexpectedly buff and practices kendo. Ishimaru's hair does turn golden when he believes that he's Kiyondo, but that's the closest thing to a power that he displays.
Third-Person Sample:
Kiyotaka Ishimaru strides through various halls of the mansion as he seeks out his destination. It is easy to get lost with the size of this overwhelming new home, yet Kiyotaka is also not one to give up so quickly. Marking every movement with determination, he is set on concealing every sign of not knowing where he is going. Yet, a few nervous beads of sweat on his forehead betray his true feelings. Eventually, he finds someone who points him in the right direction, and he accepts that direction with a nervous laugh, as he tries to play his inquiry off as being a test.
With that, he finally reaches his destination: the library. It is as impressive an archive of books as always, complete with a shelf of books relating to the subjects that he has been hoping to study at his academic level. The convenience is so great that Kiyotaka almost thinks that it is magical. But he dismisses the notion to focus on the studies themselves. He sits down at a table with a small stack of textbooks, and he begins to start taking a variety of notes on the books, in a matter that is both energetic and almost mechanical. He tries to remain silent, as well, in case there happens to be anyone else studying.
Even without a school system in place, Kiyotaka sees no reason to ignore the rules that he's seen as law in his previous academic settings. The pure act of studying is what is truly important. By working hard and improving himself, he can become closer to being a truly perfect student. Once that happens, he imagines that he will be ready to find a way to save his other classmates from that horrible killing game. As he focuses and takes his notes, he thinks to himself, I will not waste this new opportunity. I will find a way to save all of them! Stay strong until then, my classmates. And... especially you, Bro!
He then blinks and pauses for a moment. Thinking back to his last moments at Hope's Peak always leaves him with an odd headache. So Kiyotaka shakes it off, and he dives right back into his intense studies.
First-Person Sample:
[There is a particularly intense face addressing the network today. He even takes a moment to politely bow in greeting]
Good morning, citizens of Wonderland! My name is Kiyotaka Ishimaru! I believe in bold simplicity and the power of hard work!
[He pauses and stares at the camera for a moment as he prepares his next sentences.]
My reasons for addressing you all today are very simple. I may not have been here for long, but I'd like to propose a few changes to improve our work ethic and to keep us all from becoming complacent and lazy! [He then gives a brief laugh - isn't the idea of being lazy a funny joke?]
First of all, I would like to make a proposal that worked well in- ah, the last situation that I was trapped in! Every morning, a number of us should meet up for breakfast to share any new findings that we may have discovered. Sharing information is a key to finding a way to get back to our homes!
Secondly, I must ask if this place has a public morals committee! I know that such a thing may sound unusual outside of an academic setting, and a number of the people here are adults... but I have a special talent for being part of such a committee, and I feel that we could all benefit from the example that it provides! I would like to do my best to help you all! Do you understand?!
[His intensity really ramped up at the end there, but then he deflates with a simple laugh.]
Please consider my humble requests, and let us all strive to do our best in this unexpected journey!
